‘Heart’ is an important poem to Steve, because it’s one of those rare poems that look back and almost make sense of a life, and does so with a smile that has a long reach. It forms a bridge from a deeply celebratory present to the past, a time when the poet was in love and hardly knew which way was up – and now it’s all come together. It’s a simple film in close-up, letting the poem and the face do the work, sitting there in the Mortimer Forest in a bluebell wood in early summer.
